Despite flourishing this season with a 16-5 record, the RCP Post 105 Junior American Baseball Team lost the state title game to Fairfield Aug. 3.
RCP Juniors Drop Title Game to Fairfield
ROCKY HILL - For the second time in the last seven years, the RCP (Rocky Hill, Cromwell, Portland) Post 105 Junior American Legion Baseball Team lost 6-0 in the State Championship game, being defeated by the team from Fairfield Aug. 3 at Cubetta Stadium in Stamford.
With a regular season record of 16 wins and five losses, RCP finished in second place in the newly-aligned zone 1-7, one game behind zone champion Simsbury(17-4), and was given a first-round bye into the Connecticut State Tournament. In its first tournament game, July 28, behind the eight-strikeout, four-hit pitching performance by Cole Ogorzalek, RCP defeated Zone 8 runner-up Enfield 3-0. In its second game, July 31, behind the six-strikeout, three-hit pitching performance of Jake Strong, RCP defeated another Zone 8 team, South Windsor, by a 10-0 mercy rule score. Then, in its third game, Aug. 1, behind the six-strikeout, three-hit pitching performance of Ogorzalek, RCP defeated Zone 8 Champion Tolland by a score of 4-0, its third consecutive shut-out in the tourney, becoming the Northern Division Champions of the 2013 Connecticut Junior American Legion State Tournament.
RCP lost the state title game, Aug. 3, to a strong team from Fairfield (Zone 4). The game was scoreless for the first five innings, then Fairfield pushed across two runs in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh inning to seal the victory for Fairfield and make a hard-luck loser out of Jake Strong.
Leading the team were the following Portland players: Nick Adamsons, Mike Bordonaro, Mike LaMalfa, John Muskatallo, Cole Ogorzalek, Tom Pelton, Jake Strong, and Leo Thomas.
Leading the team were the following Cromwell players: Cory Baldwin, Lawton Coleman, Shant Darakjian, Nick David, Peter Dewey, and Tucker Lord.
Also leading the team was the lone player from Rocky Hill, Trevor Whalen.
Making up the coaching staff for RCP were: Head Coach Jim Nursick, Assistant Coach Jeff Coleman, Assistant Coach Kevin Francis, Assistant Coach Paul Francis and Assistant Coach Steve Radziewicz.
The last time that RCP played in the state championship was in 2007 and they lost to a team from Trumbull (Zone 4) by a score of 6-0.
