WETHERSFIELD - Wethersfield High School hockey probably rolled into last Tuesday night’s home match up against Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks--the second within the span of a week--looking to avenge the 3-0 loss that snapped their two-game winning streak.

       Unfortunately for the Eagles, it was just more of the same, with the Wild Cats emerging on the winning end of a 5-1 route.

       Throughout the season, the Eagles have been known for pulling off-or at least almost completing-unlikely comebacks. There was the four-goal deficit against Hall/Southington that they cut to one, only to fall in that contest 6-3. They fought back from a two-goal hole against East Catholic earlier in the season, losing that contest 4-2.

       But in this game, they would fall behind--on a first period goal--and stay behind.

       The contest started to slip out of reach at the start of the second period, when the Wild Cats went on the power play. Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks worked the puck up to the point, where a Wild Cats defenseman snuck a low wrist shot through traffic to put them ahead 2-0 at the 12:41 mark.

       Things would get worse later in the period, when a Wild Cats player took the puck from a scramble below the right faceoff dot of the Wethersfield zone and found a teammate crashing from up top. The puck was snapped just above the faceoff circle and into the back of the net at 5:46 for the 3-0 Wild Cats lead.

       The Eagles got one back in a goal back when a Wethersfield player, along the boards deep in Wild Cats territory, put a bad angle shot on net. Eagles forward Billy Connor was there to put Wethersfield back within two at 3-1 with 3:02 left in the second period.

       If there was still a chance Wethersfield could mount a comeback in the third period, the Wild Cats tally at the 10:05 mark made it look beyond doubtful-a faceoff in Eagles territory went back to the point for a shot that reached freshman goaltender Joe Sitarz through traffic. He turned the initial attempt aside, but the rebound was banged home for the 4-1 Wild Cats lead.

       Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks would add an empty netter within the last three minutes to cap the 5-1 win.
