The Intergenerational Costume Party with children from the community and residents at Covenant Village of Cromwell, with “The Chronicle’s” own Karen Rider joining in as “Maleficent.”
“Maleficent” Visits Covenant Village!
CROMWELL - While visiting at Disney World with her family, a little girl made a wish that she could meet Aurora and Maleficent and, like in the recent movie, they could be friends. Aurora was hard to find, seeing as Cinderella’s castle had been taken over by the characters from Frozen.

On the last day of vacation, at the last hour of the day in Magic Kingdom, the little girl and her family found Aurora--and it was a magical moment that brought tears even to the princess’s eyes. But Maleficent was not be found. The villains, after all, aren’t allowed into the Magic Kingdom until Halloween!

â€"Mommy, I wish Maleficent could come to my school so everyone can meet her and see she’s not so bad,” said the child. Mother smiled, â€"That would be something!”

And as the weeks passed after vacation, the child persisted with her request for Maleficent to visit. Realizing that the real Maleficent could not make such an appearance, the child decided that it was her mother who must dress as the villain and visit the children in Cromwell. The mother, having been a fan of the most infamous of Disney villains, decided not to dismiss the child’s wish, but instead to encourage this wish to grow into one that involved the whole family and could be shared as widely as possible in the community.

After much creative thinking and family discussion, plans were put in place to have an intergenerational costume party with the residents of Covenant Village. And, as Halloween drew nigh, opportunities arose for Maleficent and the beloved Princess Aurora (the little girl) to visit among the Cromwellians at various events. In the weeks leading up to Halloween, the child and her older sister participated in planning, including making elements of costumes, props and party favors. They felt excited about bringing storybook characters to life and sharing their passion for these characters with other people, young and old alike.

A very special ‘thank you’ to all the residents and staff at CVOC. And, many thanks to the ECS/WIS PTO and the businesses on Main Street, library staff and countless others who made Maleficent part of their Halloween festivities. And a special thanks to our friends at Lowe’s, who helped find the right parts to put together many of Malefiecent’s props!
