WETHERSFIELD - And they remain undefeated.

       The Eagles offense exploded for a 56-21 rout over East Hartford on Friday night at home, with senior quarterback Matt Sanzaro leading the way with six touchdown passes and a MaxPreps.com-reported 167.3 passer rating.

       Sanzaro hit Eagles Richard Williams and Devon Smith for a pair of touchdowns, each, and also connected with Kyle Klavins and Eric Lamore in the end zone.

       With just the non-conference Thanksgiving Day home match-up against rival Newington remaining in the regular season, Wethersfield (10-0 overall) sits atop its division with a 5-0 Central Connecticut II East record.

       Sanzaro and his offensive unit set the tone for the game almost instantly with a touchdown drive that ended with a Klavins route through the middle of the Hornets offense and into the end zone where his quarterback found him with a 20 yard pass.

       But the Hornets responded, almost. East Hartford appeared to have tied it with a 50-yard rushing touchdown on their first offensive snap of the the game, but a flag brought it back and the Eagles defense took over the possession, forcing them to punt after three more downs.

       Then the Eagles struck again-this time with the ground game. Lamore’s 6-yard run to start the second quarter put Wethersfield up 14-0.

       It was Tyler Nelson who led the Eagles rushing, however. He put up 110 yards on only 10 carries, while nabbing a pair of 10-yard receptions as a shorter option with Sanzaro under pressure.

       Although the Hornets would cut the lead in half with a rushing touchdown of their own, the Eagles responded quickly, converting on a third and nine situation with a 40 yard pass that would put them on the East Hartford 40. A couple of carries from Williams put Sanzaro well into the Hornets red zone for a 20-yard throw to Smith, who blew by his defender on a route into the right corner of the end zone.

       But with the final seconds of the first half winding down, Wethersfield wasn’t done. First, Elijah Young intercepted an East Hartford pass that was tipped into his hands by Jay Gallo.

       The ensuing drive set Sanzaro up for his third touchdown pass of the game and a 28-7 Eagles lead at halftime.

       The Hornets’ luck didn’t change in the second half. In a series of rushes late in the third quarter, they were creeping closer and closer to what should have, at the very least, been a field goal opportunity, but a fumble at the Wethersfield 18-yard line halted the drive. Then the Hornets returned again, only to have the play result in an Eagles touchdown.

       It started with a Sanzarro pass to Smith, who was running a slant from left to right. Smith got free and made it all the way to the East Hartford 20 before a Hornets defender caught up and robbed him of the touchdown, knocking the ball out in the tackle. The ball bounced into the end zone, where a scrum of Eagles players fell on it to move the margin to 35-7.
