Xavier Wins Championship Thriller
MIDDLETOWN - Xavier avenged a November loss by defeating the Shelton Gaels 28-27 in overtime to capture the Class LL-Small championship.

Shelton, who was undefeated entering the championship game, handed Xavier one of their three regular season defeats back Nov. 7. The 27-20 loss was the Falcons’ third consecutive at the time.

Senior quarterback Michael Scherer, who struggled in the November meeting, scored the game-tying touchdown on the ground and kicker Andrew Verre nailed the extra point to give Xavier their fourth title in five seasons. Verre’s point-after clinched the game, because Xavier’s special teams blocked a Shelton extra-point attempt on the first possession of overtime.

Xavier entered the four-team Class LL-Small playoffs as the fourth seed. They defeated previously unbeaten and first-seeded Newtown to advance to the championship game.

The championship victory was the last high school game for Scherer, leading rushing Teddy Duarte, and leading receiver Kaleb Lutton. The three are graduating seniors. Defensive studs Colin Morris, Cole Thorburn, Paul Marinan, Chidiebere Broderick, Edwin Luster, and Jacob Dobos are also seniors.
