Newington Volleyball Champions Reunite
NEWINGTON - The 2014 Newington boys volleyball team got together for one final time last Tuesday night. The state’s top-ranked team last season reunited to receive its championship rings during halftime of the boys’ basketball game against Farmington.

â€"It’s a lot of fun to see all the guys again,” head coach Curt Burns said during the ceremony. â€"It’s amazing to see how much they have change. Even in just six months, they’re bigger and more mature looking.”

Burns’ team finished its 2014 championship season winning 24 of 25 matches and capped off the season with their second title in three seasons. All but one of the players from the title team was able to attend the ceremony, which included a slideshow of pictures and accomplishments from the season.

â€"It’s nice to see everybody back here, especially to celebrate our accomplishment from last year,” Burns added. â€"Our athletic director Chris Myers and the athletic department thought it would be nice to have the ceremony at halftime of one of the games during the semester break when a lot of the boys are home from college.”

The ceremony put a ribbon on a magical season, but now it’s on the upcoming season for Burns and his boys. This season’s team will welcome back a handful of players from the championship squad, including 2014 most valuable player Jordan Aprea, who is now a senior.

â€"In about three months our preseason will be starting and we’re looking forward to getting another ring. I have one from a couple of years ago, so I want to fill my fingers up,” the twelfth year coach said with a smile, â€"It’s nice to celebrate the accomplishment from last season, but the guys coming back are thinking about working towards another one.”
