WETHERSFIELD - Old Wethersfield’s business district has plenty to offer. And with the addition of Old Wethersfield Country Store, it finally has a market, carrying local speciality grocery products and old favorites.

       Megan Kirk and fiance John Jakubowski, who opened their Main Street shop in December, live nearby and had felt that the area was missing a convenient market for Old Wethersfield residents and visitors to pick up everything from basics like milk, eggs and bread to specialty chocolates, snacks, cheeses and more. As frequenters of the Wethersfield Farmers Market, they brought in over 40 farmers and producers from around Connecticut--a number that is still growing--to stock their shelves. Add a giant wall of by-the-pound jarred candy and a touch of nostalgic charm and Old Wethersfield Country Store came to life.

       â€�"We’ve been getting a new product at least every other day,” said Kirk, adding that she and her fiance have added several products at the recommendation of those in the community, feedback they greatly value.

       They order fresh, local milk, cheeses, eggs, yogurt, bread and more in small batches and the products have been flying off the shelves.

       A wide array of food allergy-conscious, organic and non-GMO offerings are available, as well, all of which have been personally taste-tested by the co-owners and given the seal of approval. A particular favorite is the selection of gluten-free, vegan chocolates and truffles made by Belgian chocolatier Divine Treasures out of Manchester.

       The real treat, however, is for the kids and young-at-heart. Jars of loose candy fill nearly an entire wall of the shop, ranging from the quirky--giant Gummy Bears and Legos have been popular--to the tried and true favorites that have been around for decades.

       Snacks made locally, gluten-free English muffins, ready-to-heat mac ‘n cheese and ravioli dishes from DiFiore’s pasta shop on Franklin Avenue, local honey, specialty dips, spreads, seasonings and more are just a few of the items that stock the shelves at Old Wethersfield Country Store.
