Maleficent even made a surprise visit to the Parks and Recreation Spring Vacation Camp held at WIS.
Maleficent Visits Town Hall
CROMWELL - Maleficent, Queen of the Moors, visited Cromwell Belden Library and Town Hall in early April.

She â€"flew” into town to conduct a literary interpretive program on the history of Sleeping Beauty and the Making of Cromwell’s â€"Maleficent.” During the program, Maleficent (aka Karen M. Rider) spoke with children and adults about the origins of Sleeping Beauty folklore—pre-dating Brothers Grimm and up to and including Disney’s Maleficent. She even brought her â€"pet” raven, Diaval/Diablo, who was placed under a spell to keep him from flying around the library.

She revealed â€"secrets of the Moors,” including the craftsmanship that went into making her staff, costume and accessories. Some of these items were hand-made by Karen, others by creative friends and crafters from other cities in the U.S. Maleficent’s jewelry was crafted of adamantia — designed with â€"diamond dust and adamantium” (a nod of respect to comic creator Stan Lee, who came up with the fictional element for Wolverine’s skeleton). The jewelry is indestructible and protects The Queen of the Moors from â€"man’s iron,” which can burn faeries and zap their magic.

Children and adults enjoyed feeling fabrics and understanding what goes on behind the scenes to bring a storybook character to life.
