Local Baseball and Softball: Diamond Notes
ROCKY HILL - The baseball and softball regular seasons concluded last week, meaning that it’s tourney time. Seven of the eight local clubs made their respective post-season tournaments, keeping their championship dreams alive. Here’s how things shaped up prior to tournament week.

Cromwell baseball finished 14-6, earning the number six seed in the Class S tourney. The Panthers finished the regular season winning seven of their final nine games behind the smoldering bat of Cory Baldwin, who led the team in hits, RBI and runs. Junior pitcher Danny Ambler emerged as a reliable ace for Cromwell, winning five of his six starts, including two shutouts.

Rocky Hill made the Class M tournament following a 10-10 season. The Terriers struggled early in the season, but rebounded to win six of their last eight. They entered the tourney as the 23rd seed in their bid to repeat as state champions.

Newington (9-11) also pushed their way into the tourney with a late-season push. The Indians received late-season heroics from junior Ben Maycock to help the team win four of their final five games, earning a spot in the Class LL tourney.

Wethersfield also finished 9-11 and needed an 8-0 win over Avon in their final game to assure a spot in tournament. Drew Moran combined with relievers Chris Tawrel and Nick Hock to pitch a three-hit shutout in the crucial win over Avon. The Eagles strong pitching rotation, which includes Matt Carcia, helped the Eagles earn a spot in the Class L tourney.

Rocky Hill softball finished a fantastic regular season, winning 16 of 20 games. The Terriers closed the season winning three straight, including two shutouts thanks to the golden right arm of Jessica Greenspan. They enter the Class M tourney as the number four seed.

Newington (15-5) earned the 10th seed in the Class LL tourney. The Indian’s bat heated up as the season progressed, but it was their pitching that carried them all season. The pitching tandem of Olivia Burgos and Kat Lagace combined to hurl five shutouts, with four coming in the month of May.

Cromwell lost its first four games this season and lost their final four games, but won eight of nine games in the middle of the season to squeak into the Class S tourney. Junior Taylor Wood led the team in hits and RBI in the regular season.

Wethersfield (5-15) missed the tournament, but did win their final game of the season, defeating Glastonbury 3-2. The future looks bright for the Eagles, who will return five starters next season, including shortstop Kristina Ercolani.
