Local Golfers Compete at States
ROCKY HILL - The high school golf season is ending as the amateur golf season is getting into full swing. Here’s what you may have missed while searching for your lost golf ball in the woods.

Wethersfield finished third overall in the Division-II championships at Crestbook Golf Course in Wallingford. The Eagles finished just one stroke behind second-place Notre Dame of West Haven and it was the team’s best showing since they were the runners-up in 2001.

Junior Chris Ayers shot a team-best 78 (+5), finishing tied for fifth place overall amongst all the individual golfers at the event. Seniors Patrick Murphy, Vincent Barone, Devon Morgan and sophomore Michael Murphy rounded out the five Eagles that competed.

Cromwell surprised the field, finishing fourth overall at the Division-IV championships at Tallwood Country Club. The Panthers only had two seniors compete and still finished two spots better than last year’s sixth place showing.

Julian Thomas ended his high school golf career posting a team-best 77 (+4), good enough for the fourth best individual score. Brett Sadinsky, Nick Lattanzio, Colin Kenney and Cameron Kenney were the other Panthers that prowled the links in Hebron.

Newington finished in a three-way tie for fifth in the Division-I championships at Berlin’s Timberlin Golf Club. It was a vast improvement on last season’s 17th place finish and their highest placement since 2003.

The Hedberg duo of Jake and Noah tied atop the Indian’s leaderboard, each shooting (+5) 77. It was Jake’s last time competing at a high school level, as he will be graduating, but Noah will be back on the tee for two more seasons. Timothy Welles, Kyle Lacson and Benjamin Weyman also participated.

Rocky Hill was the final local team to compete and finished seventh at the Division-III championship at Fairview Golf Course in Harwinton. It was the Terriers’ best showing since winning the Division-IV title in 2006.

Shaun McKinnon led all Terriers, shooting a (+5) 77. McKinnon was one of three seniors on the links for Rocky Hill, joining Andrew Lanciotto and Matthew Caruso. Junior Kevin Cormier and sophomore Jake Walling also competed.
