Family-Friendly Local Summer Fun
ROCKY HILL - If you’re looking for a day of entertainment or an evening of excitement, you’re likely to find an event that’s just a short car ride away from home.

Many Connecticut towns host an array of summer events that feature local artists, crafters, foodies and entertainers. To find something unique and fun for you and your clan, try searching a town’s official website or surf to one of Connecticut’s many tourism sites to see what events are taking place in communities across the state (see list). Here are a few events you’re bound to find.

       • Carnivals and fairs: Carnivals or fairs may be sponsored by private businesses or local organizations looking to raise funds. Some fairs are established by the county and attract participants and spectators from near and far. Entertainment can range from amusement park-style rides and games to art, music and theater in wide-open spaces.

       • Summer concert series: Summer concerts may range from classical and jazz for a more suave event in a small town park or square, to song and dance events at larger beach venues and huge tents that draw thousands of visitors.

       • Taste of the Town: It’s not uncommon for towns to close down their Main Streets for an evening, or a weekend to create a walking-trail of food and drink. Some food festivals may feature one ingredient, such as cheese, berries, wine or garlic (yep, there’s a garlic festival every year). Other food festivals focus on ethnic cuisine and some offer a truly diverse taste of the town and offerings from local restauranteurs. Go hungry, come home satisfied.

       • Outdoor movies: A few lawn-chairs, blankets and snacks from home and you’ll be ready to relax in front of the big screen in the park. Movies ‘under the stars’ are typically family-friendly and schedules are available well in advance. If you want something a little more grown-up, check out what’s playing at a drive-in theatre.
