Newington All-Stars Fall to Glastonbury
NEWINGTON - Little League plays by Major League rules when it comes to pitchers batting, and in the third inning of the Newington 10/11 All-Stars match-up against Glastonbury, it turned out to be a good thing for one team.

Austyn Howe came to the plate fresh off a two-run second inning on the mound. Two Glastonbury base hits followed by a two-run double out to right field had Newington in a 2-0 hole. They were also in a 2-out hole--a Glastonbury double play had erased a walk and stolen base, leaving Brandon Baglan, who had notched a single, as the lone runner at first.

No problem. Howe would drive a shot out to center that eluded both Glastonbury outfielders--a triple that brought Baglan home and halved the deficit at 2-1. Not bad for a pitcher.

But more trouble was coming for the Newington defense. A third inning double would allow Glastonbury to regain the two-run lead, at a 3-1 score. A Ryan Beard sacrifice fly brought home another runner for a 4-1 margin, but Howe curbed the damage with an inning-ending strikeout.

He would go into the fourth inning with three strikeouts and 37 pitches.

Daniel Braga kicked off Newington’s fourth inning at-bat with a double out to center that just managed to stay in the park after eluding the outfielder’s outstretched glove. Chase Prestia knocked the ball into the same territory for his own double to cut the deficit at 4-2. Then, it was Anthony Bongiovani at the plate. He got thrown out at first, but not before Prestia came home to put Newington within a run.

But in the bottom of the fourth, Glastonbury began to pull away again. They tallied two runs during that at-bat, and then another in the fifth. Newington never found its way back, falling by a 7-3 final score.
