MDC Requires Sewer Work on Wethersfield Properties

WETHERSFIELD - The ongoing Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) Clean Water Project will require some sewer work on Wethersfield town properties.

That’s the word from Engineering and Public Works Director Mike Turner, as well as Tony Doherty from contractor Allstate Power Vac Company. Both were at the July 20 Town Council meeting to brief town officials and residents on the work--a bypass sewer line to be constructed on the Murphy Pond property while lining work is completed on existing pipes on other easements.

â€"They’re going to intercept sewer flow on Copper Mill Road and run it behind Murphy Pond Dam,” Turner said.

The work is expected to take around two months to complete, according to Doherty. The start date, however, has not yet been specified, he said.

â€"I’m hoping by October or November,” Doherty said. â€"It depends on when we get everything finalized.”

The project will require a permit from the town’s Inland Wetlands Commission, which Doherty is already seeking. He said that the bypass will be an above-ground pipe.

â€"It’s a 12-inch thick pipe that you can walk over,” he said.

And it may run along the rear of private property lines.

The double vacant lot off of Carriage Road will serve as the staging area, on which the pipe will be fused. A forklift and backhoe will be required to move it.

â€"What we’re trying to do is limit the impact on residents,” Doherty said. â€"This is gonna be the least impact for everyone-there’s going to be no road access at all.”

Doherty said that he plans to seek required access to properties--a mix of town property and private homes that run along the bypass route-on an individual, case-by-case basis. There are exactly 15--on Copper Mill Road, Griswold Drive, Carriage Hill Road and Pond Side Drive--expected to fall on the bypass line.
