Eagles Eye State Title this Season
WETHERSFIELD - With two consecutive division championships under their belt, the Wethersfield High School football team is setting its sights on that elusive state title.

Last year’s 11-0 run was ended only by a second round loss to New Canaan and a semi-finals state playoff exit.

â€"It was a special season,” said Eagles Head Coach John Campanello around the start of preseason camp. â€"The seniors did a great job and we looked to their leadership. The kids have that experience of having success. It keeps them hungry to keep working hard.”

They’ll begin the march back without Matt Sanzaro, the quarterback who averaged 190 passing yards per game on his way to 32 touchdown passes and a MaxPreps.com 128.5 QB rating.

â€"We did throw quite a bit last year,” Campanello said. â€"But we also ran the ball a lot too. Matty did a great job at quarterback, and there are some big shoes to fill there.”

And elsewhere, as well. The Eagles graduated 12 seniors at the end of last season, including personnel that drove their equally formidable running game.

Wethersfield will be looking for someone to fill the void left by Tyler Nelson, who ate up a team-leading 959 rushing yards over the course of the season.

â€"We had some good running backs,” Campanello said, â€"so there are some shoes to fill there. We have a large group of seniors coming back. That’s always good to have.”

Quarterback may be a question mark for now, but whoever is under center when the Eagles take the field in early September will have Kyle Klavins and Devon Smith to look for.

Klavins’ 716 receiving yards led the team last year, and Smith put up 595 of his own. The Eagles will also have Richie Williams, whose 422 receiving yards were good for third on the team in that category.
