Cromwell Prevention & Awareness Council
CROMWELL - The Cromwell Prevention and Awareness Council (CPAC) is a group of concerned citizens whose mission is to increase community awareness of alcohol, tobacco and other substance abuse and to provide the resources and programs that lead to the prevention of substance abuse in Cromwell through collaborative efforts of community representatives. Members of the group come from town government, the police department, the school district and interested citizens. CPAC works hand-in-hand with a group of students at Cromwell High School.

The council has been working very hard for the past year on developing a mentoring program in Cromwell. They are following the wonderful program in Middletown and hope to have it in place for the 2015-16 school year. CPAC is taking applications from interested residents over the age of 18. All applicants will be vetted by DCF and will be fingerprinted prior to acceptance to ensure the safety of our children. To receive an application, contact Susan Schein at the Cromwell Recreation Department at 860-632-3467 or sschein@cromwellct.com . A training program will be held in late September and CPAC is looking for a start date of some time in October. Information regarding the mentor program (the children will be in grades 3-5) are available at Cromwell Town Hall in the Recreation Department office.

The mentors will be asked to make a once a week commitment to meet with a selected child at lunch time at the school to talk with them and assisting them to realize that others care about them and are there to help them through their daily lives. No mentor will ever be allowed to meet with a child outside of this setting.

The greatest asset in substance abuse prevention with children is parents taking the time to talk with their own child. Be aware of what is happening in the home and who your children hang out with. It takes time, but a safe and healthy child and community is a valuable commodity. Anyone wishing to work with CPAC in this endeavor is invited to our next meeting in September at Cromwell High School. For more information, contact co-chair Susan Schein at 860-632-3467.
