Heavy Rain Doesn’t Stop High School Football
ROCKY HILL - Rocky Hill (2-2) has rebounded from two losses this season with resounding victories. The Terriers latest rebound victim was Plainville, who came to Rocky Hill winners of two of their first three, but fell 48-20 on a rain-filled night at McVicar Field.

Rocky Hill’s style of play was perfect for the wet weather conditions, allowing running backs Joe Catania and Grant Nieves to have a field day. Catania had a breakout night, rushing for 164 yards and four touchdowns and Nieves had another fantastic outing, adding 123 rush yard and two scores (one on an 82 yard punt return). It was a much-needed victory for the Terriers, who head into a bye week.

Wethersfield improved to 4-0 with a 42-26 victory at Bristol Central last Saturday. Quarterback Devon Smith accounted for all six Eagles touchdowns, five through the air and one using his feet. The senior signal caller also amassed 425 total yards, 105 on the ground. Kyle Klavins and Eric Wright each nabbed two of the touchdown passes and running back Richard Williams hauled in the other. The undefeated Eagles also have a bye this weekend.

Newington (1-3) fell at home to Meriden-based Platt 20-0. The Indians offense had trouble moving the ball and allowed Platt’s defense to score. Benjamin Maycock ran well in the loss, tallying 120 yards.

The Indians remain home this Friday when they welcome E.O. Smith to Alumni Field for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

Cromwell is coming off a forfeit victory over Coventry/Windham Tech/Bolton. The tri-school CWB didn’t have enough players to field a competitive team, therefore the Panthers improved to 3-1. Cromwell is on a bye week, so they’ll be operating on three weeks rest the next time they take they field against North Branford Oct. 16.

Middletown (3-1) jumped out to a 34-0 halftime lead against RHAM and then coasted the rest of night, winning 48-6. The Blue Dragons turned to their ground game in the home-victory, rushing for five touchdowns, two courtesy of Hunter Belzo. Quarterback Tyshaun James scored one of those rushing touchdowns and added another through the air. The win sets up a huge bout at Maloney (4-0) this Friday. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m.

Xavier dropped an overtime heartbreaking in Massachusetts, falling to Shrewsbury-based St. Johns 34-28 at Assumption College. The Falcons battled back from 13 points down, scoring 21 straight, thanks to their defense and the efforts of quarterback Collin McCarthy. However, St. Johns tied it late in the fourth quarter and won the game of their first possession in overtime. Xavier (2-2) looks to rebound this Saturday when they welcome Notre Dame-West Haven to Palmer Field for a 7 p.m. kick.
