The Indians remained strong against Platt throughout, despite the 1-1 score.
Newington Boys Soccer Ties at Home Against Platt
NEWINGTON - Two periods of extra time could not break a 1-1 deadlock and Newington ended last Thursday’s home matchup against Platt in a stalemate.

The scoreboard may have been even, but Newington looked to be the dominant side during a game in which they dominated midfield and attacking area possession and created a slew of scoring chances, particularly in the second half and extra time periods.

But the Panthers had opportunities of their own and freshman goalkeeper Jack DeGirolamo stood tall a few times while filling the shoes of injured starter Zachary Harmon.

Newington’s defense played tight for the most part, but they got a scare early in the second half when a Platt striker snuck behind the two center backs and received a through ball on what the defenders appeared to perceive as an offside play. But the whistle never blew and the player dribbled in all alone as DeGirolamo charged out to deny him.

He would come up big again in the final 20 minutes of regulation. When a Platt free kick from outside the box was ripped straight into the traffic, the rebound landed at the feet of a Panthers player who was positioned right on the Newington doorstep. DeGirolamo blocked the point-blank shot, deflecting it away and out of bounds.

Newington created scoring chances from their set pieces as well. With 15 minutes to play in the second half, Blake Mamaclay found himself in the penalty area with nobody between him and the keeper. But his shot would sail, flying over the crossbar.

Just two minutes later, Newington almost scored again-this time from outside the 18. Joey Terranova’s shot was fielded by the sliding Panthers keeper, but the ball slipped underneath him as players on the Newington bench leapt to their feet to celebrate a goal. But he recovered, pulling it out, apparently before it crossed the line, and play continued.
