State Runner-up WHS Boys Soccer Team Recognized by Council
WETHERSFIELD - The Central Connecticut Conference (CCC) Champions and CIAC Class L State Tournament runner-up Wethersfield High School Boys Soccer team made a stop at the Town Council meeting last Monday to hear a proclamation from Mayor Paul Montinieri, who congratulated them on a 19-3-1 season.

The Eagles finished atop the CCC before making it to Middletown High School, where they faced Avon High School for the State Title. They would fall 3-1 in extra time.

â€"Our team had a fabulous year this year,” Montinieri said. â€"Residents have come to know what outstanding young men they are. They’ve been outstanding ambassadors. Soccer is one of our most prestigious sports in town.”

Wethersfield High School has won more titles than any other team in the state. Even with this season’s loss in the finals, it was a historic year for the program, with senior goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton shattering the school’s clean sheet record and Head Coach Rob Jachym garnered Double Gold Coach honors.

â€"That means he teaches them not only how to be good in soccer, but productive in life,” Montinieri said to the unusually large number of Council meeting attendees. â€"These young men serve as great examples for our whole community. I know you’re here for a lot of reasons, but this is as good as it gets.”

The Eagles were 13-2-1 against CCC competition, edging state powerhouse Glastonbury High School 2-1 in a conference finals matchup also hosted at Middletown High School. They would then topple Pomperaug, Berlin, and Bethel, on their way to the state finals against Avon.

The end of the season saw the exit of 15 seniors, many of whom have been playing together since as early as when they were six years old. They were coached by former Councilor and George D. Ritchie Soccer Club President Stathis Manousos, who joined the team and coaches for the proclamation.
