Wethersfield senior Richard Williams was named to the CHSCA all-state first team.
Local Footballers Named All-State
ROCKY HILL - Wethersfield’s Richard Williams was selected by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) to the all-state first team. The team consists of the top 20 players in the state, regardless of class, selected by the coaches.

Williams made the team as a linebacker after leading the state in tackles and posting double-digits in sacks, but he could have also made it as a running back after tallying 17 offensive touchdowns (nine rushing, eight receiving) in 12 games this season.

Williams was joined by teammate Devon Smith, who made the Class L team as a safety. Smith was better known as the field general that led the Eagles’ potent offense, but he had an equally impressive year defensively, intercepting eight passes and taking down 72 ball carriers.

Newington’s guard James Lavery was also selected to the Class L first team. The 6’4 road grader solidified the Indians offensive line, which was one of the bright spots in Newington this past season.

Halfback Kristian Sapp and defensive lineman Justice Taylor represented Cromwell, making the Class S first team. Sapp scored 15 touchdowns and Taylor harassed opposing quarterback with eight sacks and 15 quarterback hurries.

Xavier defenders Anthony Caramanica and John Sadak made the Class LL team. Caramanica made 52 tackles (six for losses) from his linebacker position and Sadak made 65 stops and picked off four passes from his free safety position.
